Vietnam’s air industry is taking off once again—literally and figuratively.

In 2024, the country’s airports welcomed 109 million passengers, with 41 million international travelers—a 26% rise from the previous year—highlighting a strong rebound in inbound tourism. And now, as Vietnam’s skies grow busier, a new player is preparing for takeoff: Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA).
A new airline with island ambitions
In a bold move to cement Phu Quoc Island as a premier international tourist destination, one of Vietnam’s largest real estate developers, Sun Group, has received government approval to launch Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA)—a commercial airline expected to begin operations by late 2025.
The US$99 million venture is not Sun Group’s first foray into aviation—it already operates Sun Air, a private jet service catering to luxury and VIP clients. But SPA will mark its entry into full-scale commercial aviation, with plans to operate both scheduled and charter flights aimed at Vietnam’s key tourism and business hubs.
