In a move to promote domestic tourism and bolster national unity, the Canadian government has unveiled the 'Canada Strong Pass,' offering free VIA Rail travel for children and youths under 18 when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Railway-News writes that this initiative, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal administration, is set to run from June to August 2025.
VIA Rail Canada is Canada’s national passenger rail service, a Crown corporation wholly owned by the federal government. It operates intercity and regional trains across the country, connecting major cities like Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Halifax, as well as many rural and remote communities.
Encourage families
The Canada Strong Pass aims to encourage families to explore Canada's vast landscapes and cultural sites during the summer months. In addition to complimentary rail travel, the pass provides free access to national museums and galleries for those under 18, and reduced camping fees in national parks.
Young adults aged 18 to 24 are also set to benefit, with heavily discounted VIA Rail fares available throughout the same period.
Strengthening Canadian identity
Carney emphasized the importance of strengthening Canadian identity, stating, «Whether it’s trips to national parks and historic sites, spending the day at a national art gallery or museum, or hiking Canadian trails, my new government will help the next generation discover all Canada has to offer this summer.»
Carney underscored the broader significance of the initiative, framing it as a response to growing economic tensions with the United States.

Attack from Trump
«At a time when our economy is under attack from President Trump, Canadians are stepping up—helping our neighbours, buying local, and celebrating our beautiful country,» Carney stated during the announcement.
He added that the Canada Strong Pass is about more than travel—it’s about identity and unity. «Whether it’s trips to national parks and historic sites, spending the day at a national art gallery or museum, or hiking Canadian trails, my new government will help the next generation discover all Canada has to offer this summer.»
Further details coming week
VIA Rail is expected to release further details on booking procedures and eligibility criteria in the coming weeks. Families planning summer travel are encouraged to monitor VIA Rail's official channels for updates.
This initiative reflects a broader effort by the Canadian government to support domestic travel, enhance family affordability, and reinforce national ties during a time of heightened focus on Canadian self-reliance and identity.
